Estrildine Hybrids: Zowls, Shebras, and Zeberries, O My!
Today at the final meeting of the Finch Society of San Diego County for this year, Karl Lieberman, who is a columnist for Bird Talk and a procurer and breeder of exotic finches presented on hybrids. He brought live specimens:
Zebra Finch x Owl Finch
Zebra Finch x Shafttail Finch
Masked Grassfinch x Shafttail Finch
I am now the proud owner of a Zeberry: Bing!
Zebra Finch x Cherry Finch

Wow. Those birds are absolutely beautiful! How do you breed hybrids? Is it easy, or does it take a long, long time? Just wondering.
P.S I love those birds, and can you actually buy hybrids in Victoria?

Can somebody tell about similar hybrids male or female fertility?

I have read that some siskin hybrids or munia hybrids are fertile. And there is also the case of subspecies crosses: Austrailian x Timor Zebra Finches. Personally, I can attest that neither the Taeniopygia guttata x Neochmia modesta (male) nor Taeniopygia guttata x Poephila acuticauda (female) whom I have kept ever raised offspring.
